HOW TO REMOVE RUST STAINS FROM YOUR CLOTHES?

Step 1

You might be surprised to see that many ingredients act as great rust removers. It is about choosing the correct one for your fabric type & the intensity of the stain. For example, if you wish to remove rust stains from white shirts & t-shirts, lemon juice is the best. But for colored clothes, lemon juice will be a nightmare owing to its bleaching property. For colored cloth, vinegar is a good option.  It is less abrasive on the color of the fabric as compared to lemon juice. Not only this, but vinegar is excellent for old stains as well. Besides these, you can also use WD-40 Multipurpose Product for removing rust stains on fabrics like jacquard & jeans. WD-40 MUP is an excellent rust remover and, therefore, will help in this regard too. We always recommend conducting a small patch test to be safe.

Step 2

Applying the rust remover

After you have decided on which rust remover, you will be choosing to remove rust stains from your clothes. Soak the stained area in some lemon juice & then sprinkle some salt on it. Use your fingers or a soft brush to work the lemon juice & salt mixture into the stain.  For white clothes & unbleached fabrics, lemon juice works the best.  You will follow the same method for applying vinegar.

Step 3

blot it & place it under the sun

Allow the rust remover mixture to sit for about 10 minutes, take a clean white towel/cloth and, blot on the stain. Next, place the fabric under a sheet & in the sun to dry. Keep the cloth/fabric in the sun for about three hours or more. Sunlight also helps in dimming rust stains.

Step 4

Wash as usual

Rinse the clothing with cold water. If the stain is no more, proceed with washing the garment in the machine. But if you find that the rust stain is still present, we recommend repeating steps 2 & 3. Keep doing it till you get rid of the rust stain completely.
