When it comes to car cleaning & maintenance, a lot of focus is on the interior and exterior of the car. We tend to forget the most used part of the car, that are; the tires. Although, they are the parts that receive significant stress during rides. Not only this, but they come into contact with all different types of materials like sand, gravel, dirt, grease, oil, stones, etc. There are two components of wheels, the tire & the rim. Both of them need regular cleaning & maintenance to preserve them & lengthen their life. The wheel rims often get substances deposited on them; due to the continuous use of brake pads. Not only this but, grease from the dispersion of oil also deposits on the rims. These oils have a lot of waste products. When these greasy materials mix with water, they form special emulsions, the so-called pasty sludges that are very difficult to remove once they dry. Therefore, today we plan to teach you how to clean your car’s tires easily & swiftly.
The first step is the careful examination of the wheel, which means you need to check the tread and sides of the tire. If you find any pebbles or small rocks embedded in the tire tracks, remove them immediately. Now, the next step is to examine the tires for cracks or swelling, indicating dangerous deterioration. If you find either of the above, you must visit your tire dealer. In the end, check if the tires are firmly fit on the rim & make sure that the inflation valves have their caps.
After careful examination of the tire, you need to wash it thoroughly. There are two ways to go about it. You can use a cleaning liquid dissolved in water or a WD-40 Multi-use Product. No matter which cleaner you opt for, use a slightly stiff brush to scrub the wheels. Apply the detergent/WD-40 MUP on the wheels & start cleaning the dirt & grit. Pay special attention to the slits several times, as the fine dust produced by the brake pads is present in these areas. After you are satisfied that all the dirt & gunk has been scrubbed, rinse the wheel with clean water. Check to see if any areas are still dirty. Repeat the process and then do a final rinse.
As we explained earlier, rims get caked with sludge deposits & other materials quite often. Therefore, both iron & alloy rims need aggressive cleaning. You can use a detergent dissolved in water along with a brush to start.
But a simple washing may not be enough to eliminate grease stains and oily deposits. Therefore, after washing, it is best to apply a WD-40 Specialist Degreaser. It is a solvent-based formula that quickly removes grease, oil and, dirt without leaving any residue. It acts immediately and is easy to rinse. After application, it is best to wipe both the treated parts and the entire surface of the rim clean. Finally, we suggest repeating the final wash with detergent & water.
Once the tires and rims have been degreased and washed well, dry everything thoroughly with a microfiber cloth, it is time to polish the wheels. There are several products available for polishing car wheels without any hassle. Choose them at your convenience & as per your budget. Polishing not only gives the tires a new shiny look but also protects them from wear & tear.
If you wish to store your spare tires, please clean them thoroughly before putting them away. Also, it is best to get your tires examined by an expert or your tire dealer for defects or other signs of deterioration.
