A doorbell not only alerts you of incoming guests but also brings little moments of joy in the form of parcels & food delivery :). If you’re fond of ordering food online & prefer to do online shopping as well, your doorbell is your greatest friend. Therefore, you need to fix your broken doorbell immediately. Doorbells usually malfunction due to the following reasons:
The best way to begin is to check each of the above parts one by one & identify the source of the problem. Once identified, you can solve it accordingly.
Screwdriver
Toothbrush
WD-40 Specialist® Contact Cleaner
Tester
Cotton Swab
The first step is to clean the external button. Unscrew it and check for any foreign objects or condensation. During monsoon season, moisture or water often accumulates inside the bell button or the panel hosting it. Besides this, insects & dirt accumulation also lead to malfunction. After disconnecting the main switch, open the button panel and check the interior. Remove all the unwanted objects using an old toothbrush and wipe any water droplets or moisture with a dry cloth.
After cleaning the bell button, the next step is to check the terminals. Loosen the screw & extract the cables inserted into the terminals. Spray WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner on the terminals and cable wires of the doorbell. It removes condensation and quickly penetrates the hardest-to-reach areas, drying quickly and leaving no residue. It also restores electrical conductivity. Now reinsert the cables and tighten the terminals and check their operation before closing the button panel.
If the doorbell still doesn’t work after carrying out the above, the button itself may not be working. The best way to check this is by removing the cables from the terminals and touching their ends together. If the bell rings, it indicates that the button is faulty & you need to replace it. If the bell doesn’t ring, reassemble everything and check the transformer that supplies the doorbell with power.
Check the transformer that supplies power to the doorbell. You can easily find it in the electrical panel of the house. Firstly, check if the cables are secure in the terminals. In any case, use some WD-40 Specialist Rapid-Drying Contact Cleaner to displace any moisture accumulation. If the doorbell still doesn’t work, use a tester to check if the transformer produces the necessary voltage. If the transformer is not generating the required voltage, you need to replace it.
Remove the cover on the doorbell chime or speaker & check the voltage with a tester. If there is no problem with the voltage, your next step should be cleaning the chime armature. Use a cotton swab to clean any gunk build-up. You can also spray WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner to remove any moisture accumulation. After cleaning the chime or speaker, test the doorbell & close everything up.
