If you love to stitch your shalwar kameez and make patterns as per your desire, then your sewing machine must be your best friend. You need to take care of it & carry out a maintenance regimen to make sure that it continues to help you stitch clothes. Like every other machine, a sewing machine also needs to be cleaned regularly after every use. Not only this, but you need to service it thoroughly every week if you use it often. You may be wondering on how it can be done at home. Well! That’s what we are here fore. We will show you how to do sewing machine maintenance at home without any professional help.
Nylon Brush/Cosmetic Brush/Tooth Brush
You need to do this step after every use. First & foremost, unplug the machine before you begin to clean. Wipe the sewing machine with a cleaning rag. Dust is the worst enemy of any household machine. Therefore, you should always keep your sewing machines covered at all times. Parachute covers & even hard case covers are ideal for sewing machines as they prevent dust from accumulating.
After you have finished dusting the sewing machine, remove the throat plate & bobbin case. The lint build-up & other gunk accumulation is most common in the bobbin case & the area underneath the throat’s plate. Remove the bobbin case with a simple push. The throat plates in some sewing machines are closed with screws. Make sure you check your machine’s manual for guidance. Now to clean the bobbin case, remove it & then clean thoroughly. Don’t forget to dust the areas inside & in-between the feed dogs & the pressor foot. You can use an old cosmetic brush or even a nylon brush to clean these areas. Avoid using air blowers as they will spread the tiny lint particles & make the job messier.
The area beneath the throat’s plate is perhaps the dirtiest as it tends to be covered & often neglected. Therefore, make sure that you reach in between the nooks & crannies properly. If you find any dirt or gunk build-up, spray WD-40 Multi-use Product and use a cloth to clean the mess!
After you finish cleaning, the next step is to lubricate the moving parts of the sewing machine. If sewing machine oil is not available, you can use WD-40 Specialist Silicone Lubricant.
The best way to apply is to use one hand to turn the handwheel back and forth and see where the moving parts touch and, this is where you need to oil. Put a tiny bit of oil/lubricant on these moving parts. Crank the wheel back and forth a couple of times to work the oil/lubricant.
For the final step, wipe down excess oil/lubricant on the body of the machine. Install the throat plate and bobbin case. Plug your sewing machine & use a spare piece of fabric to carry out few test seams to make sure that everything is in order.
