Tiles add beauty & finesse to the overall space. But unclean & rusty tiles stick out like a sore thumb. Tiles often get rusted because of metal furniture, home appliances, trash cans, and even potted plants. Rust stains can become a headache if you don’t know how to clean them. Today, we will teach you how to remove rust from tiles. We also recommend focusing on preventing objects from staining your interior or exterior tiles with rust! For this, it is necessary to protect them from corrosion. Find out today the key steps to remove rust from tiles and also prevent tiles from acquiring corrosion in the first place.
Lemon and salt mixture for non-porous tiles
Non-acidic Cleaners for porous tiles
Baking soda and dishwashing liquid
A sponge or a brush to rub the stain
In Pakistan, we commonly use non-porous tiles like ceramic & porcelain in homes. Non-porous materials do not allow things to flow through them and therefore are easier to clean. You can remove rust from non-porous tiles using the following two methods:
The first method involves using lemon juice & salt. Apply lemon juice to the rust stain and cover with coarse salt. Leave on for a few moments if the rust stain is small. For stubborn stains, we recommend leaving the mixture for about an hour. Then, using a sponge, rub the area with the abrasive side. However, do not scratch the surface.
An alternative method to remove rust from tiles includes creating a paste of baking soda and lemon juice. Apply the mixture to the area and allow it to rest for few minutes. Then rub on the stain using a sponge or brush.
If your tiles are porous like marble, and granite, avoid using lemon, salt, and vinegar for cleaning. The reason is that porous materials tend to absorb. Abrasive and acidic cleaners can strip the sealer of the surface & etch the stone. You can use mild dishwashing liquid with warm water or any other non-abrasive cleaner to tackle rust stains from porous tiles.
For your outdoors, take a bucket and add 1 liter of hot water, three tablespoons of baking soda, and one tablespoon of dish soap. Apply the mixture and use a floor brush to scrub the stains. Wash the patio with clean water. You will see that the rust spots have faded nicely.
Once you have removed the rust from your tiles, make sure it doesn’t come back! The best solution for this is to protect your metal objects from rusting. Use WD-40 Multifunction Product for this. Spray the product on the whole metal object, wipe with a cloth, and voila! Your equipment will stand against rust for a good time. If your metal object is in the outdoor like a trash can, you will need to apply the product more frequently than you would for furniture that is indoors.
